The short answer
What booking software does a self-employed hairdresser need?
A self-employed hairdresser needs booking software that belongs to their business, not to the salon they rent from: their own booking link that clients can use at any hour, deposits paid straight into their own account, automatic reminders to cut no-shows, and a client list they keep if they move. It should also be priced for one chair. ResNeo's Appointments Light plan is £20 a month for one calendar, with no commission on bookings, and can link to a salon's booking page if the salon uses ResNeo too.
Built for one chair, not a whole salon
A lot of salon software is priced and designed for a team: per-seat fees, front-desk screens and features you will never open. If you are self-employed, you need the opposite. One calendar, one login, everything a busy column needs, and a price that makes sense for one person.
That is what ResNeo’s Appointments Light plan is for. It costs £20 a month, gives you one bookable calendar and one login, and includes 100 texts a month for reminders. It has the same booking page, deposits, reminders and client records as the bigger plans. You simply pay for one chair.
What a self-employed stylist actually needs
- 1
A booking link that works while you do
Clients book themselves at any hour from your link, so you are not answering DMs between foils. Put it in your Instagram bio, on Google, on your website, or on a QR code at your chair.
- 2
Deposits that land in your account
Ask for a deposit, the full price, or a card for a no-show fee, service by service. Payments go directly to your connected payment account. ResNeo does not hold booking money.
- 3
Reminders that go out on their own
Automatic email and text reminders before every appointment, so fewer clients forget and more cancel in time for you to refill the slot.
- 4
A client list you own
Every client who books you is saved in your account with their notes and history. Not the salon's list, and not a marketplace's.
- 5
Your diary in your pocket
iOS and Android apps for checking your day, adding a walk-in, or moving a booking between clients.
- 6
No cut of your bookings
A flat monthly fee, with no commission on any booking. See what commission costs on a real appointment.
Your clients are your business
For a self-employed stylist, the client list is the business. It is what you take with you, what pays your rent, and what you have spent years building. So it matters where it lives.
HMRC’s guidance for hair and beauty describes a self-employed stylist as someone who provides their own clients and is paid by them directly. If your clients sit in the salon’s booking system and pay through the salon’s till, that is hard to show. On ResNeo, every client who books you is saved in your own account, and their payments go to your own Stripe account.
It also matters for data protection. The business that decides why and how personal details are used is what the Information Commissioner’s Office calls the controller. Keeping your clients in your own account keeps that picture simple. And because it is yours, you can export it whenever you like.
Wherever you work
- Renting a chair in a ResNeo salon. Link your account to the salon’s and appear on its booking page, while keeping your own diary, clients and payments. Read how chair rental salon software works.
- Renting in a salon on other software. Run your own ResNeo account alongside it. Your link, your diary and your clients do not depend on the salon’s system.
- Renting a room, or working from home. The same booking page, deposits and reminders, with your own address and hours.
If you share a space with other independents, each of you can keep your own payments while sharing one page. Our page on salon software with separate payments explains how the money stays apart.

Keeping your records straight
As a sole trader you must keep records of what you earn for your Self Assessment. ResNeo is not accounting software, but its reports show what was booked and taken over any dates, and you can download them as a spreadsheet for yourself or your accountant.
A note on advice
Using your own booking software does not by itself make you self-employed. HMRC looks at how your whole arrangement works day to day. If you are unsure, a qualified UK accountant or tax adviser can look at your situation.
Booking software for self-employed stylists, answered.
What is the best booking software for self-employed hairdressers?
One that is yours rather than the salon's, priced for one chair, and that takes no cut of your bookings. You want your own booking link, deposits paid straight to you, automatic reminders, a client list you keep, and an app for your phone. ResNeo's Appointments Light plan covers all of that for £20 a month.
How much does booking software cost for a self-employed stylist?
ResNeo's Appointments Light plan is £20 a month, with one bookable calendar, one login and 100 texts a month included. Extra texts are 6p each. There is no commission on bookings and no per-booking fee. Standard payment provider fees may apply. It starts with a 14-day free trial.
Can I take deposits as a self-employed stylist?
Yes. Connect your own Stripe account and choose, service by service, whether to ask for a deposit, the full price, or a card to cover a no-show fee. The money goes straight to your Stripe account and pays out to your bank. ResNeo does not hold booking money or take a cut of it.
Do my clients need to download an app to book me?
No. Clients book on a mobile-friendly web page from your link, with no app to install. You can put the link in your Instagram bio, on Google, on your website, or on a QR code at your chair.
I rent a chair in a salon that uses different software. Can I still use ResNeo?
Yes. Your ResNeo account is your own, so it does not depend on what the salon uses. You take your own bookings through your own link. If the salon moves to ResNeo later, you can link your accounts and appear on the salon's booking page while keeping your own books.
What happens to my clients if I move to a different salon?
Nothing changes. Your clients, bookings and history are in your own account, so they come with you. Update your address in your business profile and keep sharing the same booking link. If you were linked to the old salon on ResNeo, you leave its page and unlink, and your own booking page carries on.
Can I bring my clients across from my old booking app?
If your old system can export a spreadsheet, yes. ResNeo's import walks you through bringing clients and bookings across in a few guided steps, with a 24-hour undo if anything looks off.
Does ResNeo do my tax return?
No. ResNeo is booking software, not accounting software. Its reports and exports show what was booked and taken, which helps when you or your accountant pull your records together for Self Assessment.
Can I run my diary from my phone?
Yes. ResNeo has iOS and Android apps, so you can check your day, add a booking or move one between appointments.
